FMIPA UI Physics Student Team Wins Overall Champion of EUREKA ITB 2022

Another brilliant achievement was carved by students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI). This time, the student contingent of the Department of Physics won the overall champion title in EUREKA ITB 2022 for the College Olympiad category. This was announced online on March 27, 2022 after the EUREKA SERIES 3 activity.

As the overall champion, FMIPA UI successfully outperformed the host by winning 3 (three) championship titles, namely 1st place by Ahmad Arsy, followed by M. ‘Anin Nabail ‘Azhiim as 2nd place, and Faris Ramadhantyo Darmawan in 5th place. Two other contingents, namely M. Fauzan Syahbana and Jovan Alfian Djaja, managed to reach the semifinal stage.

The sweet steps of the three cannot be separated from the guidance of M. Aziz Majidi, Ph.D., who was assisted by Dr. Adam Badra Cahaya, who is a lecturer at FMIPA UI with expertise in Theoretical Physics of Condensed Matter. Under the guidance of Dr. Aziz and Dr. Adam, they were trained and prepared well to be able to solve physics problems that challenge logic and test the sequence of thought patterns.

“This is important, because in the final round, participants are challenged to work on open problems, conduct case studies, to prove their ability to apply physics to life,” said Dr. Aziz to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

The open problem questions in the final were also acknowledged by Arsy as the most difficult challenge. According to him, the open problem questions required each individual participant to explore critical thinking skills to produce new ideas as solutions in solving a problem.

“So in the question, participants are asked to review 2 Qubit storage methods. Method 1 qubits are stored using a combination of static electric and magnetic fields, while method 2 uses only a time-dependent electric field. From both methods, they are asked to consider particle movement, stability, and the k value requirements for their potential. There are 2 ways to review this problem, namely Classically, or Quantumly”. Arsy said explaining the challenges of the final stage.

The idea, said Arsy, was then presented to the jury team through presentation material.

“Next, each participant must present their answer in front of the jury by way of presentation,” he added.

Dede Djuhana, Ph.D. as the Dean of FMIPA UI also expressed his appreciation to the supervisors and the three students. He said that thorough preparation, hard work, and the role of the supervisors, plus the support of other related parties were the keys to success that led FMIPA UI to achieve the overall champion title.

“Alhamdulillah, the results are optimal. We really appreciate especially the students, the supervising lecturers, also the related parties, both families and companions who have together given encouragement and enthusiasm to achieve this overall champion,” said Dean Dede. Text

EUREKA ITB is an annual national-level activity organized by the Semi-Autonomous EUREKA ITB Agency under the ITB Physics Student Association since 2016. Referring to the main theme “Physics: Creative Ways to Deal with Current Issues”, the competed materials consist of Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic Fields, Quantum Physics, Statistical Physics and Vibrations and Waves.
