The Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, Encourages Improved Statistical Literacy for High School Teachers and Equivalents

In facing the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era, one of the competencies that everyone must possess is statistical literacy. In elementary and secondary education, statistical material or studies are taught as part of mathematics lessons. This statistical literacy skill is crucial for everyone in making decisions based on the information obtained, thus achieving accurate conclusions. This literacy skill must be developed from an early age because it requires a very long process. Teacher competence in improving statistical literacy skills makes a significant contribution.

To strengthen the statistical literacy skills of high school mathematics teachers and their equivalents, the Statistics Study Program Lecturer Team, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, conducted a community service program. The community service, packaged as an online workshop, was held in collaboration with the Mathematics MGMPs of Depok City and Jakarta. The event took place on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.

The team from the Statistics Study Program, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UI consists of Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. as the head of the Mathematics Department, FMIPA UI, Prof. Dr. Titin Siswantining, D.E.A. as the head of the Statistics Study Program and facilitator, Dr. Dra. Yekti Widyaningsih, M.Si as keynote speaker, and facilitators Dra. Saskya Mary Soemartojo, M.Si., Dra. Rianti Setiadi, M.Si., Dr. Dra. Dian Lestari, D.E.A., Dra. Ida Fithriani, M.Si., Dra. Siti Nurrohmah, M.Si., Sarini Abdullah, S.Si., M.Stats., Ph.D., Mila Novita, S.Si., M.Si., Rahmat Al Kafi, S.Si., M.Si. and Gianinna Ardaneswari, S.Si., M.Si. as moderators and assisted by 3 statistics students as assistants, namely Naufal Fahri Muhammad, Myra Azzahra Putri Syah Indra, and Kamal Muftie Yafi.

The workshop was attended by approximately 109 mathematics teachers out of 204 applicants from various cities, including Depok, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Palembang, and others. The workshop focused on Improving Statistical Literacy for High School Teachers and Equivalents: Normal Distribution. The workshop is expected to support teacher learning and improve student learning outcomes, as measured by the National Assessment. Furthermore, this initiative serves as a first step for the general public to gain a proper and accurate understanding of statistics.

The activity was opened by the Head of the Mathematics Department of FMIPA UI Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D., in his remarks, Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. said that this service is a form of implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely Community Service.

“Hopefully, this workshop will benefit teachers in improving their competency in teaching statistical literacy,” said Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. in his remarks.

After the opening ceremony, it was continued with a presentation of material by Dr. Dra. Yekti Widyaningsih, M.Si. and then the participants were divided into 3 groups to enter the breakout room for discussion and debate post-test with the facilitators. The workshop participants were very enthusiastic about participating. The workshop concluded with a closing remark by the Head of the Statistics Study Program, Prof. Dr. Titin Siswantining, D.E.A.
