The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UI, won first place in the singing competition in the vocal group category through the DoreMIPA student vocal group.
DoreMIPA participated in the competition to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the University of Indonesia, which was held virtually on Tuesday (February 22nd). In addition to the vocal group category, there were two other categories: solo and duo. The winners were announced by Drs. A. G. Sudibyo, M.Si., the judge.
“Praise and gratitude to the Almighty, that in order to welcome the 72nd Anniversary of UI with the theme UI Serves for National Independence, the committee has given a challenge to all UI academics and residents to be able to participate in the singing competition,” said Drs. A. G. Sudibyo, M. Si. before announcing the winners.
“It turns out the enthusiasm of the UI community and residents is quite high. The participants in this competition include students, lecturers, staff, and alumni,” he said.
Besides himself, the jury team consists of Peny Hutabarat, S. Sos., MSM., and Dr. Drs. R. Yugo Kartono Isal, M. Sc.. Regarding the assessment components, Mr. Dibyo, his nickname among students at UI, said that there are three components, namely Technique, Arrangement, and performance.
“First place winner of DoreMIPA from FMIPA UI with the song Sirih Kuning,” said the legendary UI conductor when announcing the winners of the Vocal Group singing competition.
Gersom Masengi (Biology), the head of the DoreMIPA team explained that he and his members consisting of Muhammad Naufal (Chemistry), Salma Nadhira Friadi (Biology), Dennys Luciana Marintan (Statistics), Widis Aryasuta Ragawardhana (Geography), Tengku Almira (Geography), Grace Widelia Stefany (Biology), and Sifra Kristiarianti Satria (Biology) as a musician, explained that their preparations were quite short because the registration and material submission deadline was approaching.
After agreeing on the song to be performed, they immediately arranged the song parts and arrangements to be given to the team as accompanying music.
Besides that they have to practice and take vocal from different places, so it is quite complicated when coordinating with each other regarding the distribution of votes and equalizing harmonization.
“Our recording process was quite tight deadline But fun After we finished arranging and dividing the parts, we started recording on a music app while adding harmonies and improvising. Then, we brainstormed ideas. fresh also like inserting rhymes, as well as choosing dresscode Betawi style that fits the song Sirih Kuning which originates from Jakarta. effort “But thankfully everything was resolved,” said Gersom, explaining the recording technique to the FMIPA UI public relations team.
Not to mention, Gersom continued, another challenge was the editing process to combine the music material and recordings, both voice and video, from each individual into one complete video material.
“There are bound to be sounds that don’t fit together at the beginning of a song, or at the end of a song,” he added.
He admitted to being surprised when the judges announced his team as the first-place winner. He also hopes DoreMIPA’s achievement will motivate other students at the University of Indonesia to develop their talents and abilities outside of class.
DoreMIPA is a vocal group initiated by several FMIPA UI students from the class of 2018. This vocal group was formed in 2018 and performed for the first time at the OKK UI Got Talent 2018 event.
