Geospatial technology plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges of the future industrial revolution, such as disaster mitigation. This technology is a key factor because it can connect and integrate various data and technologies related to Industry 4.0.
In line with this, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Spatial Big Data technology also plays a role in the development of geospatial information technology, such as disaster management to reduce material and non-material losses, to sustainable Indonesian development based on the implementation of the One Map Policy.
This fact is the background for Hendun Naura S., a student from the Geophysics study program, FMIPA UI, to initiate an innovation in the application of geospatial technology, to identify the factors causing landslides to determine disaster-prone zones through the use of geospatial technology in the form of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS).
Thanks to his innovation, Hendun managed to win 1st place at the ITERA Geophysical Festival or Geofest which was organized by the Geophysical Engineering Student Association (HMTG) Mayapada at the Sumatra Institute of Technology.
Through an essay entitled “APPLICATION OF GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE ERA OF INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION 4.0 IN IDENTIFYING FACTORS CAUSING LANDSLIDES TO DETERMINE DISASTER-PRONE ZONES IN BOGOR REGENCY, WEST JAVA”, Hendun explained that the benefit of this innovation is to apply geospatial technology in mapping landslide-prone zones in Bogor Regency, so that further studies can be carried out in efforts to develop or engineer land use in an area.
“I’m bringing innovation in the form of applying geospatial technology in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 to determine landslide-prone zones,” he told the UI Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Public Relations team.
He claims that his idea is capable of producing output in the form of information needed by the community and other related parties in carrying out disaster management so as to minimize the risk of landslides, reduce the number of victims, and at the same time identify appropriate policies in regional development efforts.
“What makes this innovation unique compared to others is perhaps the importance and benefit of developing this technology for communities in disaster management, minimizing risks and developing disaster-prone areas,” he added.
The data used in this study included geology, rainfall, land use, and slope. Data processing was performed using ArcGIS software.
The research method used was an overlay to generate a landslide hazard map. This map was derived from a combination of several parameters that determine the factors causing landslides. Multi-criteria or multi-data analysis was used to classify hazards and safety zones, as well as identify suitable areas.
“The results obtained are maps of landslide-prone areas, which will then be used to assess preventative measures to reduce the risk and minimize casualties and losses from other landslide-related disasters in the future,” he continued.
Based on its application, Bogor Regency is found to be quite vulnerable to landslides. Based on the disaster risk map, further studies are recommended to determine whether regional development or land use engineering is needed to minimize future casualties and damage.
“I believe there are many benefits to participating in competitions, such as increasing knowledge and experience, evaluating skills, and expanding networks. Beyond these benefits, you can also add to your CV and have the opportunity to win rewards,” he explained.
For your information, the ITERA Geophysical Festival, or Geofest, is the largest geophysical festival held annually by the Mayapada Student Association (HMTG) at the Sumatra Institute of Technology. In addition to the essay competition, there are two other categories: a poster design competition and a geophoto competition.
The competition timeline starts with registration and essay submission on October 25-November 10, 2021, then judging on November 11-November 14, 2021, and the announcement of the winners on November 20, 2021, which will be announced live via Zoom Meeting during the Grand Webinar of the competition.
