To Improve Human Resources Quality, FMIPA UI Holds Capacity Building

To strengthen coordination and collaboration between units, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Indonesia (UI) held a capacity building event titled “Embracing Hope in the Romance of Jogja” on August 12-14, 2018, in Yogyakarta.

A total of 206 participants attended this annual FMIPA UI event. These participants included leaders, teaching staff, and administrative staff within the FMIPA UI.

The event was officially opened by Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, Dean of FMIPA UI, on the first day, and followed by a dinner in the ballroom of the New Saphire Hotel in Depok, Yogyakarta.

In his remarks, Haris expressed his gratitude for the event’s success. He also emphasized to the staff, teaching staff, and administrative staff that the implementation of this capacity building activity demonstrates the FMIPA UI leadership’s commitment to advancing the faculty.

According to him, the progress of an institution or agency is inseparable from the competence and role of its human resources. Therefore, he hopes that this capacity building program will improve the performance of each individual, thereby enhancing synergy between internal units of the Faculty.

Therefore, Haris continued, building togetherness and a shared perspective on the programs implemented by the Faculty is crucial for the advancement of the Faculty, in accordance with its Vision and Mission.

He also hopes this activity will motivate all participants to further improve their performance in their daily work.

Following the remarks by the Dean of the Faculty, the participants participated in motivational training. The training focused on developing self-identity, self-concept, and personal qualities. The goal is for participants to fully understand the process of personality formation. personality who have a more noble and positive character.

In addition, various dance performances were presented as entertainment for the participants. One of these was the Nirboyo dance. This dance was chosen because it represents values cherished by the Indonesian people: passion, friendship, and harmony.

On the second day, participants participated in outbound activities. At the Wonogondang Campground on the slopes of Mount Merapi, they continued with the Merapi Lava Tour and a visit to Prambanan Temple.

1. Outbound

Participants formed teams, each consisting of 10 people, led by an instructor. The instructor directed and explained to the teams the mission, which consisted of games to be completed. These included walking on stilts, moving marbles using pipes, flying fox, and paintball.

However, before the participants began their missions, they were required to create a lively cheer that included elements of the words “FMIPA UI” and “Yogyakarta.” Each team championed themselves through these cheers. The time given to create their cheers was very short, with the committee giving them less than five minutes. As a result, many teams were nervous and unprepared when they had to show their cheers on stage, which resulted in laughter from the other teams.

Through teamwork, the entire activity ran smoothly and lively. It was serious yet relaxed, and the participants were engaged in jokes and laughter. The committee evaluated each team’s teamwork and announced the winner at the grand finale.

This outbound activity was not only educational but also fun, helping teams learn from each other about how individuals think, work, solve problems, and have fun.

2.Merapi Lava Tour

Following the outbound activity, the event continued with a Merapi Lava Tour, which included a visit to the Kaliadem Bunker tourist destination. On the way to the Bunker, participants had the opportunity to stop at the “Remaining Treasures” Museum. Here, participants commemorated the devastating eruption of Merapi by viewing various remains of local residents’ belongings, real animal skeletons, and photographs of the disaster, captured by news reporters.

Despite the scorching heat that afternoon, the participants were eager to visit the building that served as a temporary refugee camp. The scenery around the Kaliadem Bunker was truly breathtaking.

Due to the rocky and sandy road conditions resulting from the eruption of Mount Merapi, participants were required to wear goggles and masks due to the high speed of the Jeep.

Many participants were afraid of falling and being thrown off the jeep’s speed. However, they still enjoyed the exciting experience, which was both fun and adrenaline-pumping.

Along the way, they saw views of villages devastated and abandoned by their owners following the 2010 eruption.

3.Visiting Prambanan Temple

After the tour on the slopes of Mount Merapi, participants had the opportunity to visit Prambanan Temple. Participants enthusiastically took photos and purchased several souvenirs, including handicrafts.

After exploring the Roro Jongrang Temple for over an hour, participants returned to their hotel and prepared for dinner at a restaurant in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The dinner also marked the culmination of the event and the conclusion of this year’s series of FMIPA UI capacity building activities.

Just as lively as the outbound activities earlier in the day, the highlight of the event was again the announcement and awarding of the favorite teams by Dr. Techn. Djoko Triyono, Vice Dean for Division I of FMIPA UI.

The Vice Dean for Division II of FMIPA UI announced the door prize draw.

Furthermore, the distribution of dozens of eagerly awaited door prizes also sparked enthusiasm among the participants. Participants eagerly awaited their names to be drawn on the raffle. The raffle tickets with the names on them were shuffled in a large glass jar by Dr. Rokhmatuloh, Vice Dean for Division II of FMIPA UI, before being drawn and read aloud. The event concluded with a punakawan dance.

5. Visiting HS (Harto Soehardjo) Silver Crafts, Kotagede

The next day, before leaving Yogyakarta to return to Jakarta, participants had the opportunity to visit the HS Silver silver craft center in Kotagede. There, they witnessed the silver crafting process. Guides at HS Silver explained the process of making silver crafts, from raw materials to attractive, high-value items.

All activities in the Capacity Building Training Program ran smoothly and received enthusiastic and positive feedback from participants.
