UI Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Students Win World Champion in Exploration Geophysics

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) continues to achieve outstanding achievements at the international level, bringing Indonesia’s name to the forefront of the geosciences world. This time, at the 2023 SEG Challenge Bowl, a student team from the Department of Geosciences, FMIPA UI, namely Cecilia Patra Dewanty (Geophysics UI 2019), and Kevinsyah Aulia Lubis (Geology UI 2019) achieved extraordinary achievements, winning first place at the Asia Pacific level, as well as second place at the international level.

The SEG Challenge Bowl competition, hosted by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), a non-profit organization that facilitates exploration geophysicists, tests students’ knowledge and skills in the geosciences. Similar to a quiz game, this competition challenges participants to provide precise, fast, and accurate answers.

Throughout the competition, both Kevin and Cecilia have demonstrated incredible dedication, knowledge, and teamwork.

The path to this achievement began at the regional level, where the two managed to win the 1st place title at the SEG Challenge Bowl Asia Pacific Region 2023 which was held virtually on June 18, 2023. At this regional level, the FMIPA UI team defeated strong competitors from 14 universities in Indonesia, India, and Malaysia, thus making them advance to the international level competition.

At the international level, the FMIPA UI team successfully maintained their superiority by winning 2nd place at the SEG Challenge Bowl World Finals 2023. They successfully performed at the event held on August 29, 2023 in Houston, Texas, United States.

The competition involved geophysics and geology study programs from 16 leading universities worldwide, including the Colorado School of Mines (United States), the University of Calgary (Canada), the Universidad Nacional de San Juan (Latin America), and many others. This outstanding achievement is a testament to UI students’ commitment to achieving excellence in the geosciences.

Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the achievements of his two students. Addressing the FMIPA UI public relations team, he said, “Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), and congratulations to the FMIPA UI team for this extraordinary achievement. Hopefully, other students at FMIPA UI can continue this international achievement.”

The Dean continued, “To improve student competency, we are also committed to continuously equipping students with knowledge that is in line with current developments, as well as developing logic and sharp thinking so that they can balance soft skills and hard skills.”

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc., Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, UI, also expressed his appreciation. He stated, “The University of Indonesia is very proud to have students who not only excel at the national level but are also able to compete successfully on the international stage. These achievements reflect the hard work and support of various parties, from departments, faculties, to the university, in developing students’ interests and self-actualization.”
