M. Shiqo Filla, a 2019 Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program student, brought honor to FMIPA UI by winning 3rd place in the 2022 KOMET XII Olympiad. The national-level competition was held online by the Mathematics Education Student Association, FKIP, Jambi University.
In this prestigious competition for students throughout Indonesia, he competed with 140 participants from 40 universities to win 3 main championship titles. Together with all the participants, he was challenged to complete the problem material consisting of Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Algebra, Linear Algebra, and Combinatorics.
In the preliminary round, all participants work on 25 multiple-choice questions for 60 minutes. Then, 15 participants with the highest scores will advance to the semifinals. In the next round, participants work on 10 short answer questions for 60 minutes. Finally, the final round only leaves 10 participants, then participants will work on 5 essay questions with a process of 60 minutes.
He also said that there were technical problems related to the connection that the committee had to face in making automatic corrections to the participants’ answers and affected the assessment results. However, he said that the problem could be overcome and the competition ran smoothly until the final stage and announcement.
Due to these obstacles, he continued, all participants were passed to the semifinals to then continue the struggle in the final round. He was also grateful to enter as a top 3 winner.
“Because there were technical problems with the automatic correction, the committee decided to pass all participants to the semifinals. Alhamdulillah everything went smoothly and at the time of the announcement I got 3rd place. Although initially I targeted to be the first winner, I am still grateful to be able to get 3rd place.” said Shiqo telling the process behind his competition.
However, Shiqo can understand because according to him, the implementation of online competitions has its own challenges for the parties involved. The possibility of technical constraints on remote or online meeting technology is sometimes unavoidable as he and the participants experienced in this competition.
On the other hand, Shiqo also revealed that other non-technical challenges include accuracy and focus in answering questions. Good time management is also very important in order to be able to collect answers on time.
The absence of a mentor was not a big problem for Shiqo. Participating in this competition was his own desire, so in the preparation process he did it independently without any coercion. He admitted that since junior high and high school, he had often participated in the Mathematics Olympiad and several times succeeded in becoming a champion.
“At the university level, I have also participated in similar competitions several times, including competitions held by other universities. Sometimes I only made it to the semifinals or finals but did not become the champion. Of course, my motivation is to win while I am still a student at UI. I am grateful for this result and I hope there will be other better achievements in the future,” he said.
Shiqo also said that there are various benefits to be gained by actively competing, including measuring current abilities and training the competitive spirit within oneself to be able to compete with those whose abilities are better. Competition prizes can also be used as bonus pocket money for him.
“In my opinion, taking part in competitions is one of the most useful activities outside of lectures, especially if the competition you take part in is in line with your interests. passion us. Finally, the joy of carrying the name of Universitas Indonesia in achieving is a source of pride. For my friends at FMIPA UI, stay enthusiastic in achieving your targets while you are still a student because we will not always be students here. Try your best to achieve it,” said Shiqo as the closing of the interview.
