FMIPA UI Undergoes ASIIN International Accreditation Visit for Four Doctoral Study Programs

Depok, May 2, 2025 – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI) is once again undergoing the international accreditation visitation stage by the institution  Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik (ASIIN) from Germany, which is known in English as Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This visitation is part of the assessment process for four doctoral study programs, namely the Doctoral Programs in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, and Biology.

The series of visitation activities took place over two days, on April 29–30, 2025, at the UI Depok Campus. The activities began with an opening meeting and discussions between the team Expert from ASIIN with the Rector of UI, university leadership, the Dean of FMIPA UI, faculty leadership, and the coordinators of the related study programs. This meeting was held in the Meeting Room on the 9th floor of the Universitas Indonesia Central Administration Building.

In his speech, the Rector of UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, expressed his appreciation for the presence of Expert from ASIIN. He emphasized that international accreditation plays an important role in ensuring academic quality, especially for doctoral programs, and in encouraging the internationalization of faculties and universities. This accreditation will further enhance UI’s academic reputation on a global level.

“Universitas Indonesia is a leading higher education institution committed to becoming a competitive center of excellence, playing a role in educating the nation, improving welfare, and contributing to global progress,” said Prof. Heri.

“Through this process, we also hope to continuously improve quality, instill a culture of quality throughout the university, and encourage cross-country academic collaboration,” he added.

In agreement with the Rector of UI, the Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., stated that this visitation is an important moment for comprehensive academic reflection.

“This activity is a form of in-depth evaluation of the curriculum, learning processes, and research outcomes to consistently meet high international standards. In addition, it is also FMIPA UI’s effort to improve Key Performance Indicator (KPI) point 8, which is the number of study programs with international standards,” said Prof. Dede.

The Head of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit of FMIPA UI, Dr. Denny R. Silaban, M.Kom., added that the assessment from ASIIN involves a comprehensive evaluation process of academic quality, curriculum structure, and its connection with the industry.

“The assessment from ASIIN is a thorough evaluation of academic quality, curriculum, and relevance to the industrial world.” Said. Dr. Denny.

As of 2024, FMIPA UI has seven study programs that have received ASIIN accreditation, four undergraduate programs, namely Bachelor of Mathematics, Bachelor of Physics, Bachelor of Biology, and Bachelor of Geography, as well as three master’s programs, namely Master’s in Physics, Master’s in Materials Science, and Master’s in Biology. Dr. Denny hopes that the four doctoral programs that have just undergone visitation can also obtain ASIIN accreditation so that the academic quality of each education level at FMIPA is internationally confirmed.

The ASIIN assessment team present during this visit comes from various renowned academic institutions in Germany and also includes industry representatives and students. They are:

  1. Prof. Dr. Robert Hänsch – Technical University of Braunschweig
  2. Prof. Dr. Jens Hartung – University of Kaiserslautern-Landau
  3. Prof. Dr. Alexander Heisterkampf – Leibniz University Hannover
  4. Prof. Dr. Heinrich Kern – Technical University Ilmenau
  5. Prof. Dr. Stefan Roth – RWTH Aachen University
  6. Nick Wisely – Industry Representative
  7. Dina Riska – Doctoral Student, Mulawarman University
  8. Dr. Natalia Vega – ASIIN Representative

During the two days of visitation by the ASIIN assessor team, a series of activities were conducted to evaluate the quality of the proposed study program. These activities included interviews and discussions with university leaders, faculty heads, department heads, program study leaders, lecturers, students, alumni, and industry representatives. In addition, the assessors also directly reviewed facilities such as laboratories, lecture halls, libraries, and other supporting resources.

The entire series of visitation activities concluded with a brief presentation of the preliminary assessment results by the team. Expert, which is compiled based on the guidelines and assessment criteria from ASIIN. The closing event continued with a dinner and a Nandak Ganjen dance performance presented by Density.

As information, ASIIN is one of the most advanced and successful independent accreditation agencies. By early 2025, ASIIN has accredited more than 6600 study programs from various universities from 67 countries around the world.
