MIPA UI – BAPETEN Extend Cooperation on Supervision of Nuclear Energy Utilization

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, and the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) have extended their collaboration to improve supervision of nuclear energy utilization in Indonesia.

The collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (NKB) between the University of Indonesia and the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) online on Wednesday (12/8) from the UI Rectorate Building, Depok Campus and the BAPETEN Building Auditorium in Jakarta.

The signing of the NKB was carried out directly by the Head of BAPETEN Prof. Dr. Jazi Eko Istiyanto, M.Sc and the Chancellor of UI Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., and witnessed by the invitees, including the Vice Chancellor of UI for Research and Innovation Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc, Vice Chancellor of UI for Human Resources and Assets Muhammad Luthfi Zuhdi, M.A., Ph.D., Head of the UI Cooperation, Venture and Digital Agency Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedi Priadi, DEA, High-ranking and Primary Leaders in BAPETEN, the Deans of UI, and the Director of Cooperation of UI.

The collaboration between BAPETEN and UI aims to improve the safety, security, and peace of workers, the community, and environmental protection to realize increased effectiveness of nuclear energy supervision through human resource development through education, research, and community service.

UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro, in his remarks said, “BAPETEN-UI has been collaborating since 2015 in the fields of education, research and community service, especially with a number of faculties at UI, namely, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. At FMIPA UI, BAPETEN has collaborated, especially with the Medical Physics Department of Physics FMIPA UI, including holding training and measuring X-ray doses in the field of radiology.

Furthermore, as an implementation of the pentahelix collaboration, UI and BAPETEN are also collaborating with the International Atomic Energy Agency/IAEA and users or the medical device industry. As a result of this rapid development, UI will also open a Medical Physics study program within the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia.

On that occasion, the Head of BAPETEN Prof. Dr. Jazi Eko Istiyanto, M.Sc said that the collaboration between BAPETEN – UI has been running effectively. “The collaboration between these two institutions is important, considering that BAPETEN as a Supervisory Agency requires the involvement and input of academics and experts who have competence in various important aspects in order to help BAPETEN in improving supervision of nuclear energy utilization, and UI undoubtedly has all of these expertise and competences,” said Prof. Jazi.

Concrete forms of cooperation that have been carried out over the past five years (2015-2019) include the Study of Law Number 10 of 1997 which was held on April 24, 2015 – December 4, 2015 (Faculty of Law, UI); Dose Constraint Study for Health Officers which was held on July 1, 2015 – November 30, 2015 (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UI); Implementation of X-ray Machine Suitability Test in Eastern Indonesia and several other regions of Indonesia which was held between 2015 – 2019 (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UI); Review and Assessment of the Implementation Report of the Site Evaluation Management System (SMET) for Non-commercial Power Reactors (RDNK) which was held on February 23, 2016 – August 31, 2016 (Energy Study, Faculty of Engineering, UI).

As a form of implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, in the near future BAPETEN and FMIPA UI will hold an Online Nuclear Safety Seminar (SKN) which is planned to be held in October 2020 with the theme “Innovations to Support Nuclear Safety and Security for Advanced Human Resources and Excellent Indonesia.”
