Wednesday, April 6, 2022 — The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) once again held a webinar titled MIPAtalk Series. The second series carried the theme “The Roles of Chemistry and Biology in Modern Therapeutics”, featuring Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at The University of Kansas, Prof. Teruna J. Siahaan as the speaker, and Dr. Endang Saepudin from the Department of Chemistry FMIPA UI as the moderator.
Still conducted online via Zoom Meeting, the event was also broadcast live on FMIPA UI’s official YouTube channel. The participants included the academic community within UI, external researchers, and the general public who registered through the provided registration link.
The event was opened with remarks from the Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs of FMIPA UI, Dr. rer. nat. Budiawan. In his speech, Dr. Budiawan said, “This activity has been programmed by the faculty as part of our efforts to enhance the academic reputation of the University of Indonesia.”
He noted that the topic discussed in this series was very interesting because it focused on the important role of chemistry and biology in the context of health issues. Through this webinar, he hoped to gain inputs, ideas, or relevant matters for research or collaboration in chemistry and biology on the topics discussed.
Prof. Teruna J. Siahaan revealed a new trend in therapeutic discovery and development, where the roles of chemistry, biochemistry, and biology are evolving in designing molecules for the future. Furthermore, there is a need to train new scientists and students to adapt to this new scientific paradigm. Therefore, a rethink is needed regarding changes in research and teaching at the core of science departments.
This second MIPAtalk series lasted for two hours. The webinar participants showed great enthusiasm, evident from the many questions directed to Prof. Teruna J. Siahaan.
Dr. Endang Saepudin, the event moderator, commented that the two-hour time slot felt very short given the many topics that needed to be covered. The webinar concluded with a virtual group photo with the participants.
